Am bundling two options as they both deal with a woman’s name when she keeps her own after marriage; combines/hyphenates; restores maiden name after divorce.

    1. NAME Jane /DOE/
    2. _MARNM Jane /BROWN/ (most common)
    3. _MARNM Jane /DOE BROWN/  (?? Jane /DOE /BROWN/)
    4. TYPE obviously compounded surnames
    5. _MARNM Jane /DOE/
    6. TYPE retained maiden name

I read (webtrees) that multiple surnames are suppose to each have slashes but wasn’t successful in knowing how to do this without it looking as given name is missing

    1. NAME Jane /DOE/
    2. _MARNM Jane /BROWN/
    3. NAME Jane /DOE/
    4. TYPE divorced name

    (?? Jane /DOE /BROWN/)

It may have been discussed by someone as “desirable” but I don’t believe there is any software that can handle this. Most will ignore the first part and only use the second.

As for the rest, it’s personal choice.

Also important to note that _MARNM is not correct. Popular, yes, but GEDCOM says use “TYPE married” instead. With the likely move to GEDCOM version 7 sometime in the future the “correct” solution looks likely to become standard in most, if not all, software.

The names get tricky when looking at finding sources. Very confusing. I do skip over the   birth name of spouse that the wife takes on marriage then changes. That too gets tricky when looking for records.

I do know _MARNM is customized and is used when adding married name to a record. To have the married name, are you saying another 1 NAME 2 TYPE married name instead of adding at time of adding birth name?

    Current:

    1. NAME Jane /DOE/
    2. _MARNM Jane /BROWN/

    “New”

    1. NAME Jane /BROWN/ (add for each marriage)
    2. TYPE married name
    3. NAME Jane /DOE/
    4. Sounds like you’re hinting to convert now 🙂 Might as well, if the “New” is correct format
