I have downloaded and upgraded to 3.0.0 (after having done a full backup, of course!) and cleared all known caches but all I get is a blank page. If I reinstate the offline.txt file I get the “temporarily unavailable” message. Delete it – blank page.
I shall upload the new version again shortly. Do you think I should wipe the existing kiwitrees folder (keeping /data) and do a fresh install?

Meanwhile I took advantage of the down time to TEST whether my backup plan actually works! I take regular backups of my server / website but do I ever check to see if they work? No. Well just now I did a full RESTORE and am successfully back to where I was before beginning the upgrade.

Paul, just to repeat my offline response for the benefit of others with similar issues:
First, don’t waste effort re-uploading or a fresh install. Neither are likely to make any difference. They rarely ever do. It is more important to identify the cause of the problem first.
The first point in the upgrade instructions, about a potential fatal error, is likely to be your issue. Many servers have error reporting disabled by default, so a blank page us a distinct possibility. There should be an error in the server logs though.
If that doesn’t help give me the URL and I’ll take a look tomorrow.

I tried a fresh download and upload to my home development webserver for a new install and get this message:

Thats a different error completely, and nothing to do with “upgrading”. All you have achieved by trying a new download and a fresh install is to lose the opportunity to identify the original error.
There does appear to be an issue with a fresh install. Another user has reported the same error, so please ignore this, scrap the fresh installation and go back to the upgrade process. Let’s fix one thing at a time please.

Nigel:
On my local installation (wamp) had the same blank home page. A refresh fixed that but then did not have a complete home page and couldn’t get to the admin pages. Rolled back the installation and then shut off all non-essential modules. Reinstalled 3.0 and again got an incomplete home page. Forced my way to the admin pages by URL. Turned all the modules back on. Everything now works.
Haven’t tried an update of my working site because I am on the road. You always publish the updates when I am traveling!! Cannot for the life on me figure out how you know when!
Hope this is helpful.

Done.

It means what it says. My guess is that the user you have set up in your ‘sandbox’ is not fully set up. Does it have a default individual and an individual record established? With this version kiwitrees when you login the system will take you directly to your individual record.

That’s not unsurprising. As you are travelling did you have an opportunity to read the full upgrade instructions (link from news letter or go to FAQs on this site)? This is a major upgrade with a lot of disruption to the modules and menus. No surprise that there will be minor glitches as you experienced. There is a fair degree of re-setting up required on all sites for these changes. A chance for everyone to think carefully about their sites 🙂 Menus can be hidden, moved around etc; widgets are all new and need planning / thought, users must be correctly set up (all settings), etc…..

The road to success – I deleted my existing /kiwitrees/modules folder and uploaded again.
I now have a working kiwitrees 3.0.0 system to explore
