Just a quick note to thank everyone who has so far responded to the themes survey sent out yesterday. Amazingly after barely 24 hours the response rate is already at 32%.
I would like to ask one respondent to contact me urgently. Someone added the following comment for one section:
Kiwitrees – not sure that when editing media the use of a right click context menu is the best method relative to webtree’s buttons.
I’ve been try to figure out what that means. I have never knowingly used a right-click menu option anywhere, and would not want to. So either you have missed something in the options to edit media or I have made a significant error somewhere in the code that I would like to fix. Please refer me to the place where right-click is required.

Hi Nigel
I also don’t understand that right click edit media comment.
Beware Statistics! Without the survey size, a response rate of 32% could mean 1 of your 3 users has replied … 32 of your 100 users has replied … or a third of the planet’s population has replied!! -

Of course 🙂 That’s why admen (and me) always stick to percentages 🙂 Fortunately I adhere to a slightly perverse (in marketing terms) view that the fewer users I have the better! I like that the community (actually around 65) is small enough that I can communicate with all on a personal level.

It looks like the final survey returns are now in. A total response of 48%, thanks to some excellent ‘pushing’ by Jamie on our contingent of Danish users.
For now I’l just show the results and invite comments before I make a decision. See attached image.

So, based on the survey results, and some off-line comments I will:
- Remove clouds, fab, and minimal themes
- Delete the add-on theme simpl_skyscape [it has never been very popular, and was not mentioned by anyone in the survey.
- Review the future of the old webtrees theme. I am inclined to remove it at some point, or perhaps just rename it.
- I am also watching this development. It might be an alternative to webtrees theme [ http://www.webtrees.net/index.php/en/forum/4-customising/29565-sneak-preview-of-my-new-theme ]
There was a reasonable proportion of votes for removing simpl_grey too, but there would be no point, as I would still need to support it for my own site 🙂
Nothing else will change for now.
If you have any users that have selected the removed themes as their personal theme they will default back to your designated default. Remember also that in the not-too-distant future I will be removing the user option to set their own theme (see http://kiwitrees.net/kiwitrees-road-map/ ) That might happen in the next release.

I can only agree with you. webtrees are going another way and the webtrees standard theme belongs to webtrees. Kiwi allready has its own main theme and seems odd to keep webtrees.
Since the future plan is also to show/hide all menu items and alot of small modules gives the ability to design our own kiwitrees – I can not see it should not go that way.
An idea could be to keep the different icons in the main theme image folder and as user we can deside between the icons (for those that use theme with icons) A possible ability – could also be by making it easier to change colors in the left themes – the designer theme allready had that feature! Less themes – more abilities to make it personal 🙂
By danes – the color theme is the most used (also for the wt users) and by the kiwi users the kiwi theme also became popular 🙂

The only theme I’ve consistently used since going online in 2007 is Xenea. Contrast between background and type has never been a problem. That’s the most important feature. I’ve always leaned towards text/icon option with my apps which Xenea offers. I like the event/fact icons having collected my own over the years that I “drop in” with an upgrade. Don’t remove!!!
Tend to agree with no user option change of theme with the exception of having option of one that is always for visually impaired. I’ve visited sites that are fantastic to look at but can’t read the data so if I didn’t have option of at least one other theme, I’d have real problems.

“No user option” relates to everyone registered on your site except you. You as admin will always have the ability to use different themes, but only by changing them in the admin area.
Regarding a theme for visually impaired use. I hope the updated kiwitrees theme (see http://www.kiwitrees.net/kiwitrees-beta/individual.php?pid=I001&ged=kennedy ) will replace minimal in that regard.

These can be used in any theme. You just need to add the icons, using the same folder structure as in Xenea, then enable them in admin.
