In the Home Page ‘Slide Show’ I should like to show only photographs, but even when I check only the ‘photo’ box under Filter-Type I seem to be unable to filter out media items which have been recorded with type ‘Other’ (unfortunately I have quite a lot of them and they are not very interesting when presented as small images in the Slide Show.

I can’t reproduce this, so currently wondering if you do really have all your media objects with the correct “type” setting.

Not sure what you are defining as “not very interesting when presented as small images in the Slide Show” but I would guess that images of census pages might fit that definition. You have 52 such images on your site designated as “Type: Photo”

To check, go to Lists > Media objects, select “Photo” in the “Type drop-down. To filter to just census images, enter “Census” in the Search filters box.

Ah!! I had checked in the other direction – by tracing images which had appeared in the Slide Show to their associated Individual, then clicking on the ‘Album’ tab to check on the ‘type’ of the media item. At you surmise, the images in question were census images but were shown under type ‘Other’ . However, I have just repeated the exercise, traced the image, hit the ‘album’ tab, confirmed that the image was in the row for type ‘Other’. BUT – this time I went a step further, and selected ‘edit media’. To my surprise, although displayed under ‘Other’ – the ‘type’ field in ‘edit media’ shows ‘photo’. However clicking ‘save’ and returning to the album tab view, the item is now in it’s ‘rightful’ place in the row for type ‘photo’. So the problem is not in the Slide Show filter (not surprised then that you couldn’t reproduce it) but in the album tab display. Having made a number of random checks, it seems to be widespread – many of the individuals I checked on at random, having one or more media items with type ‘photo’ appearing in the album as type ‘Other’.
Point taken about my having a number of media items with the wrong type. The vast majority of my census images were recorded with the type ‘electronic’ – which later became ‘census’ (although still appears as ‘electronic’ in the drop-down lists in album-edit media and in Lists-type) but some clearly slipped through as ‘photo’ which I shall correct by changing to ‘electronic’ .
Apologies for the mis-leading problem definition.

The album tab can be confusing. You need to read it’s FAQ page carefully, then review settings in its configuration options (admin > tools > album)

The groupings like ‘photos’, ‘other’ etc are not the same as the GEDCOM type settings (although they can be).

Thanks Nigel. I had never read that FAQ – and it holds the answer. The media items which had caused me to question the validity of the Slide Show code actually had NO type defined, so album placed them in ‘Other’ and media edit showed it’s default of ‘photo’ because there was no type and this was only added when I hit save. Following the guidance in the FAQ, I have listed all the media items with no ‘type’ – there are quite a lot of them – all created a long time ago – probably at the time I first transferred my data to PGV. I shall work my way slowly through them to enter the correct type, and will also correct the few items with erroneous type. So it’s been a useful exercise in cleaning up my data! Thanks for helping me get there!
