I have created some shared notes with lay-out, the notes where the sentence .start_formatted_area. not is added is missing the lay out, also the bold letters created using .b. is not working anymore. Is this also related to this bug (https://kiwitrees.net/forums/topic/kiwitrees-3-3-1-shared-notes-fatal-error/)?

No, definitely not related to this issue.
Is the “census assistant” module enabled? It must be enabled for note formatting to work.
Your image “sharednote2.jpg does not show the .start_formatted_area. code (also the .end_formatted_area.) Both are required for the formatting to work.
It is possible (I cannot recall) that these were not required before this upgrade. That would have been a bug, as they were always intended to be necessary.

Yes, the census assistant is enabled.
Starting with this notes using the .start_formatted_area. code (also the end), but I learned from you that it was not neccessary to use these codes. Only an empty line between the text for creating shared notes with some lay out.

I am sorry I said that. It was probably true at the time, but only because of a bug. That bug would have allowed any occurrence of “.b.” in a shared note to become bold.
All the code for census assistant has been re-written for this release, and that bug removed. In fact, now the opposite is true:
It IS necessary to use start and end codes, and it is NOT necessary to have an empty line between the first (title) line and the start code.
It should be possible to fix your notes with a batch update using a regular expression. let me know if I can help with that.

Thanks Nigel, but this I can fix myself.
The only thing I don’t understand:{ That bug would have allowed any occurrence of “.b.” in a shared note to become bold.

Is the .b. not working anymore?

Yes, it is working, but possibly not in the same way. Try changing one of your notes and see how it displays. If it is still not right, give me a link to it and I’ll see if I can improve it.
