Hi everyone – you must be wondering if I’m still alive 🙂
Well yes I am, and I have been busy – although I did also have a long holiday. A close relative from the UK visited for a month so we took her touring all around New Zealand.
But apart from that I have been working mainly in four areas, of which the easiest three were:
- Generally tidying up the display, especially for the kiwitrees theme and ‘responsive’ displays.
- Some minor bug fixes, including a couple commented on in the webtrees forums (not all havebeen fixed there yet though 🙂 )
- I have, after a couple of requests, added the contents of the “stories” tab module to the Genera Search results.
Those three are all ready for the next release (3.1.2)
But the the biggest task though has been developing my ideas on improving (I hope) the edit interface pop-ups (as discussed in http://kiwitrees.net/forums/topic/edit-interface-design )
That is not yet complete, but has reached a stage where I need some input from you, if you can spare some time. I am personally liking the change myself. I’ve been using it on my own site for a few weeks and find it very much easier than the old pop-ups. But I know from the earlier discussions that many of you are cautious about the idea. So for now it remains a “possible” inclusion in the next release.
To give you a chance to see it for yourselves I have updated the Kiwitrees demo site to include it. If you login there you can freely add new facts or events, and edit whatever you like. I’m not concerned about accuracy of content, just your views on the usability. For those who use the Census Assistant I am particularly keen to hear how you find that working with more of the available screen space.

Well, by chance, I too am just starting to edit my site after a long absence. Did check in Admin in case I had missed whether update had been issued (wasn’t paying attention to the forum). Alas, here’s your email.
Wasn’t too comfortable with tab versus popup because I can move a window over and view the record whereas with tab, I have to go back/forth (for details on info or names, etc) I know comment was made about size of the popup but usually not a problem. But, maybe using feature may change how I feel, not sure.
……………..

Just tried adding 1841 census record to Robert Darwin 1766 using CA and found a couple of things.

It works OK for me. Could it be a browser issue?

Same as always – remove the “N1” or whatever from the Note field.

Oh how I wish I could have…… Better than getting up before 5am for the kick-off yesterday, although it was worth the effort 🙂

It works as intended – but have to get used to the different way. But yes – have to alt-tab – if need of some info. But after I while – I will prolly not think about it anymore!

Kiwi:
After playing with the Demo, the Tab process would work for me. The Tab screen format and handy location of the needed links should make the use of the Tabs pretty second nature in a hurry.
While working this, how about doing something similar for the log in menu item; replace the drop down with a simple log in page similar to what is used on this forum. The current drop down is “flaky” on some browsers.

In reply to my post of last night, I think it must have been the wine talking.
I have spent the morning working on Robert Darwin adding and editting details and census entries. Everything works fine. I can detach the tab to overlay it onto a census image and transcribe from one to another just as I used to do with a popup window. The look and feel of the whole process is elegant and I would be happy to see this released. I have just gone back to my existing site to add a 1911 census entry to see which way I prefer … and the answer to that is your new way.
Great work.

Unfortunately my experience of the drop-down is the total opposite, so I would be very reluctant to change it myself. But I never expect everyone to have the same opinions as me, so I can at least offer some suggestions:
- I assume you are aware that the drop-down login is a feature of only the kiwitrees theme? So switching themes would be one possible solution for you.
- Fixing the issue is another (hopefully). You said “… “flaky” on some browsers …”. Can you be more specific? I’ll gladly take a look at it with those browsers and see if the problem is reproducible and fixable.
- The third option is a simple customisation. Using the information form Custom themes you could add a custom ‘myheader.php’ file. It would only need one small change from the standard kiwitrees theme header: replace lines 139 to 151 (inclusive) with just “echo $menu->getMenuAsList();”

RoyI actually really liked the new log in version (hover over from drop down). I’ve used it for years on JewishGen and it allowed me to log in without leaving the page I was at (when time out kicked me out).

Thanks for all the comments on this, both here and by email.
Overall the feedback has been positive, though with some understandable caution. Change is never easy, and for long term users the edit interface used here has been the same since PhpGedView was created in about 2002.
I have therefore decided to progress this and have included it in the developing code for the next release. That will now be 3.2.0, as this is a significant change.
