(Because it’s for my A-D site, am using forum)

Set the Admin prefs to: BASIC Options for autocomplete on places; NO “Use GeoNames database for autocomplete on places”. (I use their site directly)

Typed “Toro” and saw list of places that looked good. Then spotted “Toronto, , Maryland”. No idea if it exists but went to Admin > Update all the place names…”. Entered it in Search for. Entered it again in Replace with (to make correction) and drop down showed all kinds of strange Toronto entries in parts of USA and around the world.

Interestingly, tried Preview and was told No places found.

<Quote>The “basic” autocomplete simply searches your existing place names for any that start with the string of characters you type, …</quote>

Not quite. List of “Toro” includes El Toro Memorial Park Cemetery, Orange County, California, USA. Or is it because El is ignored?

Thanks for the reminder. That text needs updating. It was changed a Looooong time ago, but accidentally re-used when the basic / advanced feature was added. New wording will be:

The “basic” autocomplete simply searches existing place levels for any that contain a word starting with the string of characters you type …..

The difference is subtle, but key in the example you gave. So, “El Toro Memorial Park Cemetery” is a place level, and it contains the word “Toro”, which you search for.

[EDITED: important correction to text of first response]
