The GEDCOM import I’m working on is from long ago, starting in Reunion (Mac). Dirty. So, found online validator, much like the HTML validators I once used. What’s left after a lot of cleanup are errors in my Sources that I need to review. But there are a few related to media:

    0 @[email protected] OBJE
    1 FILE A3654-1.png
    2 FORM png
    3 TYPE photo
2 TITL ABRAMS, Sylvia [Dec 28, 1978 Star]

*** Line 15296: Invalid content for FORM tag: ‘png’ is not a valid <MULTIMEDIA_FORMAT>

Some didn’t have the 2 FORM png, just 2 FORM so were flagged as
*** Line 15416: Invalid content for FORM tag: ” is not a valid <MULTIMEDIA_FORMAT>

Valid or should there be change? Going from Reunion -> PGV -> webtrees -> kiwitrees is a long journey. No idea whose code I’m looking at. And, except for Reunion, all allowed raw editing….

No, absolutely do not change those. This is an area where GEDCOM desperately needs updating. The spec limits media “FORM” to bmp | gif | jpg | ole | pcx | tif | wav

Thankfully kiwitrees is happy to accept any of: ‘avi’,’bmp’,’gif’,’jpeg’,’mp3′,’ole’,’pcx’,’png’,’tiff’,’wav’,

If you have any media with just an empty 2 FORM. then yes, you should fix these. The easiest way is to edit them, but you can edit then reimport the GEDCOM manually if you prefer.

Perfect, that’s what I thought. FORM should not be empty but PNG was good.

Was surprised there wasn’t default of some kind. However, like I mention, this file has gone through a long journey. Scared to do my others! Akin to validating HTML because way back, web browsers couldn’t read a lot of stuff properly so validation helped. Now they are quite forgiving. But it was nice to have clean code 🙂

Now to looking at what they call Source errors.
