I was starring at a record after timeout noticing what wasn/wasn’t displayed. This one showed his death. Correctly, sources didn’t display. However, where that source included an image, it did display. Curious why.

Could be any of a number of things:

    • Privacy settings
    • Any added ‘RESN’ tag(s)
    • Where in the source the image was added (i.e. the source itself, or the source/citation, or the event the source is attached to)
    • A bug

Possibly others too. I would need to see an example, and all associated GEDCOM data for the individual and the source, privacy settings etc, to provide an accurate response.

In the Admin Panel, I have Source set to members. No other settings.

One answer, thanks, but the rest are needed too….

My example was but one. I’d like settings for all images not showing if not logged in (visitor).

Going with my current setting of SOURCE set as members in Admin Panel. This is code for but one, I’d like whatever settings I should use for all images, if possible.

First, make sure the source record is private (Sounds like you have set that correctly in admin).

Second, make sure your image is added IN the source, not beside it. See below:

    1 BURI
    2 DATE 06 OCT 1954
    2 PLAC Toronto Ontario, Canada
    2 SOUR @S6@
3 OBJE @M6720@ (clipping from news for the source) This will be hidden with the source it is part of
2 OBJE @M6721@ (picture of headstone) This will not be hidden with the source because it is NOT part of it. It is only part of the event

You cannot hide images, only the tag they are contained in.

There’s one attached which is all that’s allowed unless I change manually which I usually don’t. That said, you answered my question that images aren’t private.

I just viewed another record and see the image with an event that doesn’t show (because of date), the image doesn’t either. So, guess that’s okay.

Was just curious. because I’m working with vital statistics. Ontario has 3 different settings for birth, death, marriage and it’s driving me insane because I can’t find stuff. Law changes makes it worse. Just when I though I’d access 1918 this year or next, it’s changed to 2023! I have to stick around!!

Actually, I should really explain that one-line answer it bit better, because it IS possible to hide media objects, albeit with some limitations.

    I said:

You cannot hide images, only the tag they are contained in.

For most practical purposes that is correct. But technically, if you go to the Administration “Privacy” settings tab for your family tree, you CAN select “Media objects” in the lower section, and set them to “Show to members”, or “Show to managers” etc. It works too.

BUT, it will only protect “level 1” media objects (i.e. “1 OBJE @Mxxxxx@”). Your example above had level 2 and level 3 examples which it woulld not apply to. Level 1 means media attached to the Individual (or Family) record directly, not to any tag / event / fact etc.
It will also hide that media object EVERYWHERE it is used (remembering that a single media object might be used many times, connected to different people, events etc.).

The other way that works is better, but again has disadvantages in practice. In this case, when adding or editing a media object you can add a “Restriction” (RESN tag). which will only apply to that single, specific media object. Like privacy, a restriction can be “Show to members”, “Show to managers” etc. But like the example above, this is linked to the object, so will apply EVERYWHERE it is used.

For these reasons I never use either option (though many others do use one or both, I know). I prefer to embed media appropriately in events / facts etc, and rely on the automatic privacy of the individual (dead / alive based) only.

I do see the difference. I’ve been doing it with Source forever! I think it was to know the group of people, families and image associated with a source.

That said, I do prefer not showing if visitor so will *slowly* (I have tons) convert as I edit a record for other reasons.

I changed 3 images to 3 OBJE from 2 OBJE and they now don’t appear. Didn’t realize I’d have to code, thought I would be able to use editor screen. But, did obtain results wanted.
