Ever since GoogleMaps were updated for webtrees (sometime before 2010) it has included an option to display a Google StreetView image for a place, which you can set in the GM module administration area.

That introduction occurred long before Google required registration, an API and payment possibilities.

I personally used it briefly in the very early days, but then abandoned it as, in my opinion, it wasn’t worth the considerable effort required to set up and manage it on top of the normal map administration for coordinates etc.

I have recently looked at again, and find that it is not actually covered by the API etc. I have set up for the maps. I havn’t investigated what additional authority Google require for it, but clearly something woulld be needed.

So, before I even consider doing anything about it, I have a couple of simple questions for all users of kiwitrees:

    1. Did you know the StreetView option exists?
    2. Do you have it enabled and working?
    3. Do you think it is worth ‘fixing’ the feature so it does work, or should I remove all reference to StreetView from the system?

I should probably admit at this point that my personal preference is to remove it, but not if users see it as a valuable feature.

Feels free to comment on the forum, or directly to me.

I know of StreetView but to not use it through kiwitrees. It shows present day images whilst most of my genealogy data refers to the past. If I want to see today’s image of a place I can use Googlemaps or Google Earth or StreetView outside of kiwitrees. If want to see something more like the time in question I look for old photographs and old maps. It’s not a feature I need or want.
However, if someone can crack the Top Level view of GoogleMaps to only show 1 copy of each continent instead of two and an enormous Antarctica …

Agreed fully. Really no justification in my mind for spending time and effort on catering for this within kiwitrees.
I often use Google StreetView or Satellite view to check out things like churchyards, but that can be done very easily outside kiwitrees – no point in duplicating effort.
