I’ve not been editing my tree for quite some time but returned yesterday. Am finding when I enter partial place name, it’s not offering me drop down of options, or completing. Checked Admin and option is selected to use Geonames.

Thanks. You are right, I can see that geonames is not responding. I’ll try and find the fix for that in the coming week.

(I will transfer this topic to the bug reports)

    Bug found and fixed.

The attached zip file can be used to fix it. Replace the file kiwitrees/autocomplete.php on your server with the version in this zip folder.

Just a reminder, “geonames” is a very large external gazetteer of place names. It will be slower finding places there than when simply returning a place you already have in your kiwitrees database (the latter is always checked before looking at geonames). So expect a at least a few seconds delay for a response. Speed will be improved by typing as you type more characters.

I added the fix then tried typing part of a place that I knew was previously used. No response, just spinning. (Browser & kiwitrees cache were cleared after install).

I use Geonames website when wanting to add new places but let it autocomplete when I know name exists.

What was the place name you tried, and what part of it did you type? (So I can test).

Can’t explain your sentence “ I use Geonames website when wanting to add new places”?

Geonames is built into kiwitrees autocomplete code. You don’t need to do anything different whether the place already exists in your data or not. So that sentence confuses me a little.

Bowie, Prince Georges County, Maryland, USA – was my test.

I know Geonames is built in but I find sometimes I prefer to view it using the Geonames website.

It works for me, but there are a LOT of places in the world starting with “Bow”. I had to type “Bowie, Prince” before I got the correct answer.

Sorry, correction. Geonames only found “ Bowie, Prince Edward Island, Canada”. Not the USA place you tried. I can’t tell you why that doesn’t seem to exist in their data.

What is the url of the Geonames database you use?

Looks like correct place name is “ City of Bowie, Prince Georges County, Maryland, USA”

That works ok in kiwitrees, from Geonames lookup.

Okay, it’s my personal A-D site that isn’t working for Geonames. Tried my Rebbes site and it’s working. Both Safari and Firefox. Worked fine up until this current session (last session was October 1, 2020)
