I sometimes run names by Geni to see the 60,000 degrees of separation…(when I have an inkling I’m related in some far-off fashion)

“Peggy is your first cousin once removed’s husband’s great uncle’s wife’s niece’s husband’s uncle’s wife’s first cousin once removed. ” and it then shows every person who makes up this relationship.

Of course, I don’t usually have all those people entered . And, in many cases, never will! But it’s interesting knowing. What would be the best tag for keeping this? And, should it be noted for each person I have recorded, or just the uppermost person I do have recorded?

What would be the best tag for keeping this?

That ones easy – there’s no GEDCOM tag for it, so it must be a Custom Fact. IMHO there can never be any alternative solution for “new” tags, and of course “abusing” existing ones is a no-no in my book.

And, should it be noted for each person I have recorded, or just the uppermost person I do have recorded?

That one is personal choice, but given the data is from Geni and therefore, in my opinion, of highly dubious accuracy, I’d record it as few places as possible 🙂

Dubious? Could well be, no question, but interesting to see all these people anyway. It’s fun reading the narrative of who people like Peggy are. And who’s to say it doesn’t provide clues.

I am going to create the custom tag for recording. Will think about how many in the same family I’ll attach the info to.

I am going to create the custom tag for recording.

Is “custom tag” a miss-type? I didnt mention it. I suggested a custom FACT, because that is an existing (multi-purpose) GEDCOM tag. It is the counter part to custom EVENT.

A “custom tag” is, in theory, an option, but a very non-GEDCOM solution. It’s also complex to do.

I didn’t know custom tags were complex. So, will stick with my method. I have a _TODO and always use the same Research task phrase so I can search on it. Then have source to Geni (family).

I’m still not sure we’re speaking the same language.

What do you think the “custom tag” is that you mention?

Do you know what I mean by a “Custom fact”?

The latter is a standard GEDCOM option, available in the Add fact drop down. Providing you simply decide on a standard descriptor it’s by far the easiest solution, and can have a source added.like any tag.

Im using the custom fact just to make my custom tags.

Made it like a code system and I used the userdfined translation to show proper name for the tag.

Having ex. a DEPT which cover a list in the churchbook where the priest wrote down people who came or left the city (the standard tag covers people who left the country imo). Using the standard MARR to cover marriage which are not related to me (way to make it more simpel to me not having a huge amount of halfsiblings and familytabs). Having also a COURT which cover some supreme court facts where I can link to the media with the case.

So as Nigel suggested use the custom fact and you will not get into trouble with the standard gedcom tags 🙂
