I don’t touch setup for email, but leave at Internal messaging with emails. Today I was looking at my user list and notice an attempt by someone I don’t know to create an account. I didn’t receive notice via email. Luckily the email address is captured so was able to respond using my account request form.
What settings should I be using for me to get emails for these requests? This is the first “unsolicited” request so never knew I wouldn’t get them.

Anything except what you have been using. Personally I prefer “mailto” as it completely excludes the internal messaging system which I find pointless. Perhaps I should modify the choices so that becomes top of the list and therefore the default? Or maybe remove the internal messaging completely?

The default should be that which will send the email 🙂 The internal messaging was just part of the option default so never touched. Just never bothered setting up SMTP so used whatever the program gave.

SMTP is nothing to do with it. You do not need to setup or use SMTP in order to have emails sent to you.
But anyway, yes I will change the default anyway as it will make my own life easier 🙂But how do you (or anyone else reading this) feel about removing the entire “internal messaging” system” storage system?

Realize SMTP is separate option. Used it long ago but returned to default out of laziness after reset of either PGV or webtrees. Internal messaging doesn’t make sense to me. If that’s what I see on My Page, then just as easy not to, probably set one time just because.
Required scenarios that I think of:
Email: receive email notice when new user requests account as notification
Email: receive email when new user accepts confirmation to trigger Admin to set approval.
Email: receive emails from users who use the site’s contact link and not their email program (I got one new user this way)(At some point I want to revisit the idea of my custom account request page. Got it laid out, just not linked to the request new account which in turn links to sending of the emails.)

I set the Admin account to “mailto” and created a new account, then confirmed it. My Admin account didn’t get notified. Looked in Users and do see an account pending.

I admit to being a bit puzzled why there is an “internal messaging” system, and have found some new users perplexed by the whole webtrees registration process. There seem to be too many steps … and too many email options in the administration pages. Was the internal messaging system when conceived meant to be an in-house bulletin board re-invention?
I’d be happy to see it changed. -

How did you create the new account? If you did it using “Add new user” while logged in as admin then no, you wouldn’t get an admin notification. We assume that if you did it, you would know anyway!
If you go through the full registration as a prospective new user then it should work. I get new user request every week or two and it always works fine for me. I get notified first of the request, then of the fact they have confirmed their request.

I used the home page create account link. The “user” (me) got the request to confirm but Admin (me) didn’t get notice of either prospective new user or when confirmed.

It really isn’t much different to any other site, and it is (IMHO) essential that not only is it robust, but is seen to be robust for a site that stores private and personal data. Such care is of course somewhat alien to Facebook users and the like!
The steps (if the default set up is used) are just:
- Fill in and submit registration form
- Reply to the confirmation email (checks that email address is correct and valid)
- Await admin approval.
