I’ve always thought when you click the button beside the Name field (it becomes editable), then enty in the Given/Surname fields will not affect it.
NAME: Sally BROWN should stay as Sally BROWN when edit to Given Name
GIVEN NAME: Sally, Sarah
SURNAME: BROWN----- [updated: 31Aug2023]

My recollection is slightly different, plus logic tells me what you describe would never be possible.
I “think” it works the other way round. Once you have created the NANE entry by entering a GIVN and a SURN, you can edit that NAME without it changing the GIVN or SURN. But if you edit either GIVN or SURN directly they will re-write the NAME which you will need to edit again.
So the work flow must always be to set the GIVN and SURN first, then you can alter the NAME.
However I rarely use that feature so I am happy to be corrected, and to look at the code (current and some earlier variants) to see if anything has changed.

If it’s then working as you expect, that’s fine. Just something in back of my mind thought that was how to “lock” NAME when editing GIVEN.
Sometimes I add GIVEN name variations where the person is never known by the other name but it’s recorded. In the given example, “Someone” added Sarah, possibly when she did the delayed registration herself 75 years after her birth. I’ve not come across anything else referencing that name.
Just reviewing the stuff I found on ancestry.ca over the long weekend and it’s amazing how many inaccuracies there are probably due to language barriers and one/both parents being illiterate in English.

Well we are both working from recollection so I will look into it in the next few days.
Regarding census entries, yes I agree. Over the years looking at census (and other documents) I have been constantly astounded at the range of “discrepancies”. Not all are accidental either. I’ve seen many odd entries clearly designed to cover various “indiscretions”.
In such cases I always a) transcribe everything EXACTLY as I find it on the original document; and b) by adding explanatory notes Occasionally I also add full or partial (cropped) images to emphasize the point.Nigel
