I picked a snippet from contact (visitor) to translate as testing grounds for other portions. Entered British change and saved. Cleared caches and will wait, as you say, to see if it works.
Entered the French version (Google translate) and got error as soon as I clicked save button

Not sure what you mean by a “snippet”, but it MUST be the exact and complete text from the core code. For the contact page (visitors) there are only two pieces, as per my previous explanation to you (items 1 and 2). You cannot pull parts of those out on their own.
Cleared caches and will wait, as you say, to see if it works.
If by “cleared caches” you mean you went to Admin> Clean up data directory and deleted the “cache” item then you should not need to wait. Just refresh the page. If you cleared any other caches (browser, server etc, then you wasted your time, and that’s why you need to wait. 🙁

I suspect it is baulking at some unescaped special characters used in the French translation (accent, apostrophe etc). If so I will need to fix that. Can you give me the standard and custom translations you used there. I suggest you do it as an image of the custom translation page (just the top part) to avoid the forum mangling any code, as the precise raw text is essential to test.

Because it happened with French, thought that was the case.

Yes, as I thought.
I’ll look into avoiding the issue, but for now try adding a back-slash in front of the apostrophe
Votre nom et votre adresse e-mail est requise uniquement dans le but de vous envoyer une copie de cet e-mail et de répondre à votre question. Votre nom et votre email seront stockées ou utilisées à d\’autres fins.
But note that the original has HTML code round the “Please”. If you don’t include it the translation won’t work. Thats what I mean by “exact and complete” copy of the core text.
<b>Please</b>Nigel

Then if I understand you if all must be exact, there are form fields between the two portions. Should those be included in original portion?

No.
If you look at the actual code (/modules_v3/contact/module.php) you will find the relevant text is wrapped in a translation variable like this:
WT_I18N::translate(‘…… this is the text……..’)
You need the exact and complete bit within but excluding those single apostrophes.

BRITISH: I used two passes of Standard text entries. First was for the Please note (with HTML bold) etc. Next for the part for providing email. Added my translation to both and saved.
Second Standard text was for the Email provision. There was no HTML code to include.
I’ve read the FAQ, I looked at the module, read your emails. No idea what I’m not including.
FRENCH: I now omitted doing French to get the British first. Will address later.

Did you actually check the file as I suggested? My guess is you are still not including the COMPLETE text between the single apostrophes.
But to be sure, give me a copy (an IMAGE) of your Custom Translation page showing your standard and custom text.

Yes, i did look at the file.
Then it appears you didn’t do much while looking. you needed to copy / paste the text from there between the single apostrophes as I described earlier.
This is what the standard text really looks like if it is an EXACT and COMPLETE copy:
On your image:
- You are missing the two html tags
- You appear to have a line break of some sort between “You will” and “be asked to verify”
