Wondering, when the Census data is incorrect, do you make note (Incorrect/Correct) in the Shared Note (via Assistant) to that effect? Some names are really off and I know not to change the entry.

For me personally, it depends on the source of the errors.

If they are errors of transcription (e.g. by Ancestry, or FindMyPast etc.) I do correct them. I treat the census assistant as a ‘transcription’ of the original document, so try to record each part as close to that as I can get it. But I might also record the change as a note (usually, but not always in the Assistant) in case I need to search for it there again, one day.

If it the error on the original document, then I record it in the assistant fields exactly as found, and then (usually) I will add a note explaining the ‘error”. Not just for names though – same applies for every part of the census. Relationships are frequently wrong (wife when not married, visitor for cousins, etc..), as are dates and / or ages.

Access in Ancestry is limited to 1921 Canada  but without detail of most fields. Name, Age, birth is about all. But did notice option to record changes to record which is good. (Noted in parenthesis on page)

Sadly, the official site for 1921 or earlier gives name and age and “tracking info” only. One needs to view actual record to obtain details and I don’t know about others but 99% of the Canada ones I’ve seen are literally scribbled over to point of not being able to read the original entry.

Unlike 1940 USA census which is free on Ancestry and contains full detail, 1921 Canada is not marked free but can be accessed. Full details though are not shown.

Next year (2023) is a bonus year for 1931 census is release and I bet pandemic will be used to delay this. Same too with Ontario archival info for vitals.
