I prefer not to enforce MariaDB over MySQL if I can avoid it. But it will depend how far they diverge. If it gets too much effort to maintain compatibility with both, then perhaps I will have to.

Xampp now only ships with MariaDB though. If WAMPP and LAMP etc decide to do the same, then it might cease being an issue as the majority will move anyway.

Then there are also continual questions about how long Oracle will continue to maintain MySQL (as open source) as well as their own OracleDB. I understand they contracted to keep MySQL maintained until 2014 when they purchased it, but that’s well past now.
