webtrees version 1.1.0 released

The webtrees development team have just announced the long-awaited major release 1.1.0.

It has been an unusually long wait for this release, nearly 3 months when we had already got used to a new release every four weeks or so. But that was deemed necessary as a it includes a couple of very major changes. Those changes relate to the administration pages, and the popular "Google Maps™" module. That is on top of a long list of bug fixes, and other improvements.

The two major changes are:

  1. A completely re-designed administration interface. Much cleaner, simpler and faster to find the settings you need.  It has its own, non-configurable style template. This is in common with many other products such as Joomla, and WordPress, as used on this site. The design actually has a bit of a "WordPress" look to it, which as your own "kiwi" designed it is not all that surprising ;)
  2. The Google Maps module has been completely overhauled. The main purpose was to implement Google's API version 3.0. This has one important improvement, the ability to function without needing a special "key" supplied by Google. But at the same time the module has been improved in many other ways, not least being the addition of Google's "Streetview" feature. So as well as plotting the location of your ancestors property, you can display a modern day view panoramic view of it too!

Note: kiwitrees client sites will all be upgraded to this version within the next 12 hours.

webtrees leaps in popularity

A major milestone for webtrees. Today the current release of (1.0.6) passed its first 1,000 downloads for a single version. It is only 4 months since webtrees was launched and its popularity is growing rapidly. From just a few downloads when first launched, it is now averaging more than 30 per day, and rising! Reading the product's own support forum we are already seeing comments about its next release, a  significant change to version 1.1.0, expected sometime later this month. It will include a completely new administration suite, as well as further bug fixes and other improvements. As always, all installations on kiwitrees will be automatically upgraded soon after that release becomes available, together with advise for clients on using any new features.

Upgrade for webtrees

We have just upgraded all our installations to the latest version of webtrees. Version 1.0.6 was released on 6th December 2010 and included a number of bug fixes, but importantly a significant change to the terminology used in setting access to groups of users.

Where previously terms like “access”, “none”, “edit” etc were used these have now been simplified. The new terms properly describe each of your user’s “role” on your site. But remember this is only a change in terminology. The underlying access and privacy controls have not changed; only the names used for them. Here is a table showing the old and new terminology:

Old New
None Visitor
Access Member
Edit Editor
Approve Moderator
GEDCOM manager Manager
Site admin Administrator

The webtrees WIKI site has a useful guide to access and privacy available now which gives more details about using these: WIKI: Access & Privacy
